im going abroad for three months and my flat will be unoccupied. do i have to tell my insurer?

Most insurers will insure a house for upto 60 days if it is left unoccupied (some 90). I very much advise you to phone your insurer and explain the situation. They will be able to cover you - but they will probably make a small one off charge.
