If i choose which garage i want my car to be repaide in and subsequently there is a problem with that repair, will my insurer help sort the problem out?

It depends. If you choose the garage and your insurer simply agreed with your choice, then i suspect that any problem will be for you to sort out.
However, if the insurer selected the repair garage, then they will have to take responsibility for any subsequent problems.
