I am interested in taking out medical insurance to cover my family but my wife has just become pregnant.

a) will they cover scans etc
b) what do i need to consider when chosing a policy.

To be honest i have no idea about medical insurance and want to know if i need it or the nhs is going to be as good.

Often pregnancy is not covered by a private medical insurance plan but it depends upon the insurer.

When considering what plan to accept you must decide.

What type of cover you want?
Where you want to be treated?
How much can you affoard to pay?
What exclusions are there?

Medical insurance is designed to cover the cost of treatment for curable short term illness or injury. (These are called "acute conditions"). In itself, pregnancy is not defined as an acute condition and treatment for normal pregnancy will have to be handled through the NHS as usaul whether or not you have medical insurance. However, if someting went wrong with the pregnancy and treatment was required then you may be able to claim for that. But beware, many policies will not allow you to claim on a condition that existed before you commenced the policy and some will say that no claim can be made for the first X months.

So my advice is get advice from a specialist medical Insurance broker. You'll find one on the Medical Insurance page of this web site. Apply for a policy and talk you position through with the Broker. Different insurers have different claims policies and he'll know which is bst to approach.
