Claims for Knee Injuries

As you probably know, knee injuries are quite common especially amongst sportsmen and women. But they can also be the result of accidents such as slips, trips and falls, and road traffic accidents.

If the accident which caused your injury was not your fault, then speak to Claims Justice because you may be able to claim compensation. And thanks to their No Win No fee policy, it won't cost you a penny!

Types of Knee Injury

If the knee receives an impact or is twisted beyond its normal range of movement, this may cause injury to the knee joint. Sometimes the bones can be damaged, but more often it is the cartilage or ligaments which are affected. The more common types of injury that can result are as follows:

Sprain : A sprain can occur if a knee ligament has been overstretched. This will be painful and some swelling may appear but the knee should recover after a week or so. During the recovery process, it may help to wear a knee support.

Muscle strain : A muscle strain is similar to a sprain, but occurs when the muscles around the knee are overstretched

Bleeding in the knee joint : Bleeding can occur when any muscle, tendon or ligament is torn.

Snapped ligament : If you feel a "snapping" sensation accompanied by a sharp pain, then you may well have snapped a ligament. There are two main sets of ligaments in the knee - the cruciate ligaments and the collateral ligaments. Cruciate ligament damage is especially common amongst sportsmen.

Torn meniscus : The meniscus is the part of the knee made of cartilage. The injury will be painful on either the outside or inside of the knee joint (depending on which cartilage is damaged) and you may have some swelling. Your knee may also lock or feel as if it's "catching" and may give way beneath you.

Treatment for Knee Injuries

Because the knee is such a complex joint and takes so much physical strain, damage can require a variety of treatments. For some, simple rest and ice pack treatment will suffice. For others physiotherapy or surgery may be required. Knee strengthening exercises are also commonly an integral part of the treatment.

Knee surgery : These days surgical repairs to knees are often conducted using an arthroscope. This instrument allows surgeons to work inside the knee through keyholes and avoids the need to open up the joint. This technique simplifies the surgery and greatly shortens the recovery period.

The recovery period will be very much improved if the patient's muscle structure around the knee is strong. Sometimes surgeons will delay surgery in order to get the patient on a course of knee strengthening exercises so that the subsequent rehabilitation will be more straightforward.
