In 2000 when the UK Government removed the public's access to Legal Aid for most accident claims, it was done on the basis that people who needed help could instead make a compensation claim through a solicitor on a No Win No Fee basis.

The solicitor assesses the details of the person's claim and on the basis of those details, they decide if they are likely to win. If the chances are good, they take the case on using a No Win No Fee agreement to cover their fees. The basis of the agreement is that they receive nothing at all if the compensation claim fails, or is subsequently abandoned.
