protecting my policy

i've been advised to "protect" my car insurance policy. what does this mean & what are the advs?

Many car insurers will offer you the option to "protect" your no claims discount if you have built up a good no claims history - ususally afer 5 years claims free.

If you protect your policy ( and they will charge you a small surcharge for doing this), then if you have an accident that will not affect your no claims discount because it is "protected". Most insurers allow the protection to cover the first accident in any one year but if you have a second, that will not be protected against.
