The decision is a matter of convenience, security and cost.
Convenience wise you'll always need some cash and that will be cheaper to take with you rather than withdraw it from your credit or debit card. From a security standpoint, carrying a large sum of cash is fraught with danger so i would not recommend that. The other alternative which you have not mentioned is travellets cheques. They provide you with security and will be cheaper than using you cards.
My advice is take enough cash with you to last for the first few days and then get the rest of your budgeted spend in travellers cheques. Try not to use your cards because they will be expensive to use.
